The council's Local Plan supports the production of parish plans, which become material planning considerations in the planning process.

A number of the borough's parish councils have also produced village design statements, another material planning consideration which encourages developers to consider existing local character when designing new buildings or extensions.

Local housing needs surveys identify affordable housing needs in a parish and help planning authorities to develop policies to best meet the identified needs.
