Councillors put spotlight on access to Queen's Diamond Jubilee leisure centre

The Whittle scrutiny committee, a cross-party committee of borough councillors, is looking into access for pedestrians, cyclists and users of mobility aids as well as parking, including disabled parking and parking for parents.

They are particularly interested in whether more vulnerable users of the leisure centre are given the help and support they need to use the centre easily, and also want to look into whether unauthorised day long parking by non-users is affecting access to the facility. At the moment the committee is in the early, fact-finding stages of their work.

Cllr Neil Sandison, who chairs the Whittle Scrutiny Committee, said: "We want to ensure that all those using the leisure centre have ease of access, be it for families, disability parking or access for cyclists and mobility scooters.

"We will be visiting the site on 31 January to get a better understanding of how the site works and also see if the free spaces are being abused by non-users who do not contribute to the centre's upkeep.

"We have set aside some time for residents to submit their comments before the committee meets again, so that their views can be taken into account when we prepare any recommendations."

The Whittle Overview and Scrutiny Committee will be hearing from GLL, the leisure centre operator, and the bowling club at its next meeting.
