The event brought together Year 11 to Year 13 students for an afternoon of inspiration and engagement, where they had the opportunity to meet and speak with influential female politicians from across the political spectrum.

Held at the Town Hall, the reception included a visit to the Council Chamber, giving students a behind-the-scenes look at where key decisions affecting their community are made. The visit aimed to demystify local government and encourage more young women to consider roles in public service and leadership.

Throughout the event, students heard directly from female councillors about their experiences in politics, the challenges they have overcome, and the importance of representation and diverse voices in decision-making.

Cllr Barbara Brown, Mayor of Rugby, said: “I was delighted to welcome these students and give them the chance to meet women from across the political spectrum who are making a difference in our borough.

“Encouraging young women to take an interest in politics and public service is vital. I hope this experience has shown them that their views matter and that there is a place for them in local decision-making.”

The reception formed part of the council’s ongoing commitment to supporting young people and promoting equality, diversity and inclusion, while celebrating the achievements and contributions of women in public life.
