Rugby’s new place brand scheme features special town colours, and new logos – including an ‘Expressive R’ - to complement Rugby Borough Council’s wider regeneration plans for the town centre.

The place brand has been developed to create a consistent look and feel across everything from signage and digital platforms to printed materials and community engagement projects.

Businesses and community groups in Rugby will also be able to use the new branding for their own purposes, such as one-off events.

By using a shared visual identity, the council hopes residents, businesses and partners will more easily recognise how different initiatives fit together and contribute to the town’s long-term ambitions.

It is also intended to give local people a stronger sense of pride and ownership as improvements are delivered across Rugby.

The branding hinges around four core values that have been developed with the help of local businesses, community groups and residents:

  • A people-centred town – close, connected and convenient
  • A town of action – play, perform, participate
  • Learning for life – innovation, skills and knowledge
  • Stronger together – a community that cares

Projects involving the place branding will be guided by these four values, while new materials promoting Rugby will incorporate the brand’s new designs.

Rugby-centric colours drawn from the Rugby Colour Palette Project, such as ‘Guildhouse Rose’, ‘Whittle Green’ and ‘Radio Mast Sky’, will provide the colour scheme.

A new ‘Rugby’ logo in rounded, bold lettering will give the town’s name an approachable feel when people read it, and the ‘Expressive R’ will be a new way to abbreviate the town’s name.

Simple illustrations to go alongside messaging about projects and events have also been created.

Groups wishing to use the place branding for their own projects can contact the Council directly to access the brand toolkit.

Leader of Rugby Borough Council, Cllr Michael Moran, said: “We want residents of Rugby and people who visit the town to have a better sense of what Rugby represents.

“This new place branding not only gives us guidance around what we want our town centre improvement projects to achieve, but recognises Rugby’s core values and gives people a visual sense that many of these projects are all working towards the same goal of making Rugby a better place to live, work, visit, and invest in.

“We want everyone to collectively understand and embrace what makes Rugby unique, and the new place branding will go some way to achieving this.”

Cllr Jerry Roodhouse, Chair of Town Centre Working Group at Rugby Borough Council, added: “A lot of changes are planned in Rugby over the next few years, and the new place branding will tie a lot of these ideas together.

“Having a consistent brand associated with the town that everyone can use will increase civic pride and help Rugby establish a distinct identity of its own.”
