MARKING the Council's Golden Anniversary, a celebration event was held following the Annual Council meeting on 16 May at the Ben Hall, Rugby.
This event marked celebration of 50 years of service to the residents of Rugby and thanking Council staff for their contribution. There was a speech from the Mayor of Rugby, Cllr Simon Ward, and cake cutting together with staff, Freeman and past Mayors.
As part of the event, the Mayor invited members of Rugby Ukrainian community who sang at the Benn Hall.
The name of the Ukrainian singers performing were called "Shchedryk". This word means the name of one of the most famous Ukrainian songs, which is known as "Carol of the bells" worldwide.
Commending the event, Cllr Simon Ward, Mayor of Rugby, said: “It’s an absolute honour and a privilege to be elected the Mayor of Rugby and in the 50-year of Rugby as a Borough Council.
“It was nice to have a little celebration with all Rugby Borough Council members to commemorate the occasion after all the formalities.
"It was lovely to have family and friends supporting at the ceremony and a special thank you to my friends from the Rugby Ukrainian Community who sang beautifully for all guests in the Benn Hall."
During the event the Mayor greeted Naomi Rees-Issitt, Founder of OurJay Foundation, which is the Mayor's chosen charity for the year.
The celebration event forms part of the Council's golden commemorative programme of events this year.
A spokesperson for Rugby Borough Council, said: "The 50 year anniversary creation of our borough is an opportunity to celebrate the very best of the borough, to commemorate the council's service to its residents and recognise the contributions of so many".
