Shopfronts form an important part of a place’s perception by both residents and visitors, forming a large part of the street scene at ground level. Shopfronts in Rugby currently make both positive and negative contributions, and it is important to ensure going forward that future development enhances its setting and the town centre overall.

The proposed Shopfronts Design Guide SPD provides design guidance for shopfronts in Rugby, especially in the town centre. It also establishes design principles for both historical and contemporary shopfronts, to ensure that they contribute to, rather than detract from, the character of rugby, supporting both the Rugby Local Plan and the Town Centre Regeneration Strategy.

The SPD doesn’t require existing shopfronts to be changed, but will support improved designs where owners want to make changes that require planning permission. The guide will also provide a framework for planning officers when making decisions or recommendations to the planning committee.

A spokesperson for Rugby Borough Council said: “A large part of our town centre is a conservation area and consists of heritage buildings, and this proposed document will give us the tools we need to protect this heritage for future generations.

“The proposed guide will make it clear for applicants what materials, colours, and general look and feel we will support so that they can submit high quality proposals ready for approval.

“By protecting our heritage and ensuring contemporary buildings are complementary, we will be able to create a high quality town centre environment that is a pleasant place to visit.”

The draft Shopfronts Supplementary Planning Document is available at www.rugby.gov.uk/ShopfrontsSPD. The consultation closes at 5pm on Tuesday 18 June 2024.
